American Harp Society, Inc. Edition of Aristid von Würtlzer’s Space Odyssey for Four Harps (1971)
Chief Editor - Sonja Inglefield
Co-Editors - Mark Zabriskie and Camille Anderson
Aristid von Würtzler (1925-1997) was a Hungarian-American harpist, teacher, conductor and composer.  In 1970, he formed the New York Harp Ensemble – a touring harp quartet – for which he arranged and composed almost 200 pieces.  Space Odyssey is one of these compositions.

This edition has been compiled using five original sources: two manuscript scores (one of which is more of a sketch), two out of the four manuscript parts (Harps 1 and 3), and an LP recording performed by the New York Harp Ensemble under von Würtzler’s direction.  All of these sources may be found at the International Harp Archives at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.  The new AHS, Inc. printed edition was premiered by the Los Angeles Harp Quartet at the 11th AHS Summer Institute, on June 22, 2015.

50th Anniversary Commission Project

The American Harp Society, Inc., commissioned two works in honor of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the AHS. The works were premiered at the 2012 National Conference in New York City. Lowell Liebermann’s (lowellliebermann.com) Music for Harp, Op. 116 was premiered by harpist Sivan Magen and Michael Torke’s (hyperlink www.michaeltorke.com) Wild Grass, concerto for harp and double winds, was premiered by harpist Sara Cutler and the Keystone Wind Ensemble. The Torke work was co-commissioned with a consortium of eight universities, coordinated by Jack Stamp.

40th Anniversary Publication Project

In 2003, Jane B. Weidensaul and Willow Hall Press published Marcel Grandjany’s O bien aimée for baritone or melody instrument and harp (with text by Paul Verlaine), in collaboration with the American Harp Society Harp Literature Committee, in honor of the 40th anniversary of the founding of the AHS.

On Commissioning

New works are often a result of a Commission. Working with a living composer, jointly making a new piece of art come to life, sharing fresh ideas with a composers, and hearing input about a piece from its creator are unique and exciting opportunities.  Click here to download a helpful article On Commissioning.
