The American
Harp Society is pleased to announce the Sixth Summer Institute
and 16th National Competition, which
will be held at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles,
California, June 19 – 23, 2005. The Institute will be sponsored
by the entire Pacific Region of the AHS, so those attending will
be welcomed by members of all four Southern California chapters
as well as harpists from Hawaii.
Our exciting
National Competition is one of the main focuses of the Institute/Competition
program.
The schedule will be arranged
to allow conferees to enjoy it all, including the opportunity to
hear and learn from the bright and serious young competitors who
have passed the rigorous tape examination to be admitted to the
Competition’s final stage in Los Angeles.
This year’s
Summer Institute will include workshops and concerts geared to
the teacher and the student. Kristie Withers, our AHS
Young Artist and winner of the 2003 Young Professional Division
will give the opening concert. Subsequent evening events will feature
USA International Competition winners Maria Casale (1989) and Dan
Yu (2001) in concert, as well as an entertaining and informative
multi-media-enhanced evening about the “Golden Age” of
studio recording featuring Catherine Gotthoffer, Dorothy Remsen,
and Ann Stockton. Linda Wood Rollo will moderate the conversation,
and David Ice will provide supportive audio/visual material from
his extensive library of harp-related film and recording clips.
Afternoon
harp masterclasses will be offered by Maria Casale and Dan Yu for
students of all levels. Three morning workshops are
planned to address some of the needs of teachers. A variety of
subjects will be presented, such as: Founding and sustaining a
harp education or harp ensemble program in the public schools;
Improvisation for students; and Ensemble repertoire for all levels.
A special session will address “Why Wasn’t My Tape
Accepted?” This seminar will allow the many excellent students
and teachers of students whose tapes were not chosen as competition
finalists to speak with panelists and discuss special considerations
related to preparing for competition performance, as well as the
recording.
Following
the traditional 2005 Competition Winners Recital, there will be
a dinner and concert “on the lighter
side” at a Los Angeles area venue, which will highlight the
spirit of the Pacific Region.
The USC campus is located in downtown
Los Angeles, with accommodations available in the dormitories on
campus or nearby hotels. There are
several meal options available, including buffet-style meals on
campus, and a wide variety of restaurants within walking distance
of the
conference site. There is ample parking available on campus.
The
University is across the street from the Museum of Natural History
and Museum of Science and Industry. Just minutes from the
new world-renowned
Disney Hall, USC is also close to the LA County Museum of Art,
the LaBrea Tarpits, the Getty Museum, Universal Studios, the
Kodak Theatre
(new home of the Academy Awards), Graumann’s Chinese Theater,
and the Hollywood Bowl. Disneyland is within reasonable driving
distance from the University (45 minutes) … and don’t
forget the beaches (20 minutes)!
Visitors to USC will find easy
access from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX); the Burbank
and Long Beach airports are also centrally
located. The great variety of cultural and entertainment sites
makes Los Angeles a terrific destination for a family vacation
before or after the AHS Summer Institute. A two-hour drive from Los
Angeles to the north reaches the beautiful seaside community of Santa
Barbara, with its lovely shops and tranquil scenery. Two hours to
the south is San Diego, home of the world-famous San Diego Zoo, Sea
World and the border to Mexico.
We cordially invite you to come to
the Summer Institute in Los Angeles for a delightful week of listening,
learning, and
sharing with other harpists, and hope you will make it an
important part of your summer plans!
