(PDF) updated June 1, 2003 The American Harp Society 5th Summer Institute will be held at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah, from June 21 to June 26, 2003. The 15th National Competition and Anne Adams Awards will be a major part of the event. There will be a full schedule of Institute classes still allowing for time to sample the ongoing competitions. From historical to hysterical, there is something for everyone. Visit the International Harp Archives and view David Ice’s newest version of Harpywood video (including Harry Potter!) Skaila Kanga, professor of harp from the Royal Academy of Music in London, England, will give a master class on writing your own cadenza for Handel’s Harp Concerto in B-flat. Skaila “doodles” extra cadenzas for fun (an unusual way to spend your spare time). She will give examples of four unpublished cadenzas as well as a “how-to” paper for each of us to compose our own. There will be a master class on Baroque ornamentation given by a team of composer, harpsichord player and a harpist. The class will focus on 1 or 2 pieces and give basic rules in interpretation of ornamentation symbols. We will be able to hear harpsichord interpretations translated to the harp. We will spend one day at the International Harp Archives on the Brigham Young University campus in Provo, Utah. David Day, curator for the archives, and a group of volunteers will lead us through the International Harp Archives for a close look at displays, historical harps from the Salvi Collection, music binding and more. You will be able to see the state-of-the-art preservation methods for collections and donations made by harpists. Everyone’s donation is important. Perhaps you have 78rpm records or historic photos which you could bring in person. A Suzuki harp presentation by several teachers will be part of one master class. A brief demonstration of the Suzuki teaching method, the new reading methods, and how to prepare a group concert, will be topics of discussion. New orchestral accompaniments to existing harp solos will be showcased by many players from throughout the United States. Salzedo’s Tango, McDonald/Wood’s Toccata, and Two Guitars, Clementi’s Sonatina are some of the featured pieces. Dr. Murray Boren has written amazing arrangements to include harp in chamber or orchestra groups. Dr. Boren will also be one of the non-harpist judges for the Competition. The AHS Competitions, the Anne Adams Awards and all evening concerts will be held in Libby Gardner Hall and the Dumpke Recital Hall in the Gardner Music Building which houses the University of Utah School of Music. Through generous contributions on the part of the School of Music, this will be both an affordable and extraordinary Institute. Salt Lake City is a harp-friendly city. Inexpensive student housing is available at the east side of the campus in the Olympic Village where the athletes were housed during the most recent Winter Olympics held in Salt Lake City. The Olympic Village commands a spectacular view of the entire Salt Lake valley. Campus shuttles will be available to the music building on the west side of the campus where all Competition and Institute events will take place. Public transportation is available between the campus and downtown Salt Lake City. Schedule
