The American Harp Society is pleased to hold the 14th National Competition, the Anne Adams Awards Auditions and the Fourth Summer Institute at the beautiful new School of Music and the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland from June 24 - 28, 2001. Our site is a state-of-the-art performing arts complex located in suburban Washington, DC. The sprawling campus which has a student body of 30,000 is designed with Williamsburg architecture and is easily accessible by all modes of travel. The Baltimore/Washington Airport is 30 minutes away and the University is within minutes of the Beltway. All facilities for the events are air-conditioned and part of one complex. The housing and dining facilities are air-conditioned and near the complex. Everyone will be able to comfortably attend both the competitions and the Institute events which range from workshops, classes and Master Classes to concerts and recital presentations.


The five-day Institute/Competition event will begin with the Anne Adams Awards Auditions on Sunday, June 24, followed by the Winners’ Recital on Monday evening. The AHS National Competitions, which will include all divisions, the Grandjany Prize, the Prix Renié and the Malone Prize, will begin on Monday, June 25. This competition will continue through Thursday and culminate with a Winners’ Recital Thursday evening, the final gala concert. All competition events and concerts will take place in the Gildenhorn Recital Hall, Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center.


The AHS Fourth Summer Institute begins on Tuesday, June 26. The opening recital will be given by Maria Luisa Rayan, Young Professional Division winner of the 1999 AHS Competition at USC. The concert Wednesday evening will feature chamber ensemble and harp ensemble works. Daytime workshops will be held in the School of Music and are designed to allow more time for in-depth study of a variety of pertinent topics ranging from Teaching Beginners of All Ages with Linda Wood Rollo and Elzbieta Szmyt, An Afternoon with Eleanor Fell to Instant Harp Ensemble with Ray Pool. We are pleased to offer two Master Class/Workshops with Yolanda Kondonassis on Wednesday, June 27, and Chantal Mathieu on Thursday, June 28. The air-conditioned high-rise LaPlata Hall will be our campus housing. Single rooms or double rooms are offered furnished with twin beds, linens, desks, dressers, chairs and blinds. A coin-operated laundry and vending area are also available for residents at La Plata Hall. Please note: Reservations for campus housing will not be accepted after June 4. Information concerning housing off-campus as well as travel directions is included for your convenience. The closest facility for housing other than the dorm is The Inn and Marriott Conference Center (1-800-727-8622) which is on campus. Other than the dorm, none of the housing is within walking distance. The parking passes for campus parking are included only in the Residential Package. All others may use the Stadium Drive Parking Garage which is located directly across from the Performing Arts Center. For those staying off-campus, parking passes may be purchased from the Conference and Visitors Service.


College Park offers a variety of restaurants and shopping areas. The campus also has several eating places and is known for The Dairy Bar, a great place for ice cream. Nearby Washington, DC, provides a marvelous array of cultural activities and sites for everyone. As the campus is off the northern section of the Beltway, Baltimore is in close proximity. Weather in late June usually is warm and the temperatures are in the 80’s to low 90’s.
